The reserve’s rich Māori and Pākehā history is thoughtfully documented on the on site noticeboards, complete with historical photographs.
A favourite local spot is the beach near the pine trees in the lower part of the reserve, an ideal place for afternoon or evening swims, fishing, or simply enjoying a drink while watching the sun set behind the Kaimai Ranges, particularly at high tide when the water fills the channel in front of the pines.
