1 Bedroom Cottage in Maruia
Welcome to The Keep; a unique and private destination for those who appreciate both the finer things, and the raw beauty of an alpine valley half way between Christchurch and Nelson.
On a hill looking across the pastural valley of Maruia to the Victoria Park Mountain range, and Ive's peak, is Glen Erin Farm, and the Keep, A dedicated space to relax and invigorate. Within 25 minutes drive are six tracks. Lake Daniels, Lewis pass tops, Rough Creek, The Klondyke Route, the St James Track, and The Mt Haast Track.
Then soak in your private massage hot tub with uninterrupted views of the Victoria park mountain range and a rare view of Ives peak, and relax by the fireplace to watch a movie using the unlimited WIFI.
There is no other residence on the property so during your stay you will have absolute privacy. The cottage is brand new, built solidly on a concrete foundation, with steel framing and solid decorative ply walls. The adjacent bathroom and laundry is a few meters away adjoining the expansive deck. The appliances are top of the line and ready for you to enjoy a weekend, or a week away.
The dawn chorus is begun by Tuis and Bellbirds. Hawkes, Kingfishers, and occasionally a falcon can be spotted.
The small lake has brown trout, eels, and the streams and wet lands boast many native frogs, birds, and insects. Behind the lake is an extensive vivid display of heavy mosses. The area all around the lake and the private driveway to the keep is being developed as a reserve. Deer, Rabbits, hares, and young wild pigs are also resident.
Go bird spotting and watch the tops across the valley for Chammois (European mountain goats), bird watch, or study the stars at night from the spa. There is no light pollution and being at 400m above sea level the sky is crystal clear when cloud free.
Glen Erin is an organic farm that has had no sprays of chemical fertilizer for at least seven years. It is being developed into a restoration agriculture style homestead. Currently Glen Erin has a herd of Belted Galloways. We hope guests will return in future to see the development and feel a part of the project, as profits from the Keep will be going towards this legacy.
There is a cafe and 2 petrol stations within 15 minutes at Springs Junction, and the character towns of Reefton and Murchison are just over 45 minutes away. The road to Reefton is especially beautiful, and Reefton has interesting places to shop at, eat, and explore.
The Maruia River is the only river in the South Island with Rainbow trout.
Swimming on summer afternoons in the Maruia River is pleasant as it flows for 30 km in full sun from Springs Junction. The water is crystal clear and there is a nearby swimming and picnic spots.
The drive to Glen Erin boasts breathtaking scenery, over the Lewis pass, the Rahu Saddle, along the Buller river road, or down the Shenandoah Highway over the Murchison saddle.
Please note: Regular cars will find the driveway to the keep no problem, however anything with a very low profile, or low grill, will have to be driven carefully. The speed limit on the drive is 15km/hour. The exact location of the Keep is a secret. Directions will be sent to you a few days prior to your arrival.
There is a ramp onto the deck, making the Keep partially accessible however we would need to move furniture to allow easier access to climbing into bed, and are also unsure about if the bathroom would work for someone in a wheelchair. Please consult photographs, and contact us to ensure that what you require can be facilitated.
SECURITY NOTE. For the safely of our guests, and the security of the Keep, and Glen Erin farm; all access points are monitored carefully. Vehicle and passenger details are observed and recorded..
