When it's time to make a plan for the day and get out for some exploring, make a day trip to Cape Reinga via a three-hour return journey. Or within an hour's drive, you can visit Kerikeri for attractions like The Stone Store, the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Paihia, even stop by the famous Kawakawa Hundertwasser toilets, or ride on the unique Bay of Islands Vintage Railway.

A must visit is historic Mangonui, just a quick five-minute drive away.

If you don't feel like cooking when you get home from the beach, and you and the family are in the mood for some amazing local cuisine, try out The Thai or Indian Spice, both located in Mangonui. The popular Kebaby Turkish Street Food truck is another option, located a two-minute drive or 20 minute walk along the beach, at Cooper's Beach shops.
