Negative: The facilities are a bit dated. Plus, things got a little weird at the end. After we checked out, the owner called and said one of the doors was broken and needed repair. They claimed that “the screws had all fallen out and were scattered all over the floor.” They also said that “in New Zealand, any kind of repair costs money.” This struck me as very odd, since I cleaned the floor around 10pm after dinner and didn’t see any screws or parts lying around. And honestly, I don’t think anyone in my group stayed behind to do some DIY after I left the house around midnight. While waiting for the owner to send through some photo evidence, I checked with my group—and it turns out we actually had a few photos and videos taken during our stay that showed the door in question. In those, the door looks completely fine. I shared the photos with timestamps back to the owner to show that the door was in good condition when we left. But as of writing this review—over 20 hours since the call—I still haven’t received any response or photos from them. I’m not sure what this was about. Maybe it was an attempt at a scam, or maybe just poor communication on the owner’s part that led nowhere. Either way, the call left me feeling uneasy, and I couldn’t help but wonder if this was happening because my group is also Chinese. Honestly, after living in Christchurch for a decade, this was the first time I’ve experienced something this bizarre.
